GlocalMe G2 - Review 2022

The GlocalMe G2 is an international Wi-Fi hotspot that offers 4G LTE data connectivity in 100 different countries. Service is provided by RoamingMan, and you lot can hire the hotspot for a reasonable $9.99 per day, which gets you 500MB of 4G LTE data and unlimited 2G. If speed and reliability are your priority, the GlocalMe G2 provides fantabulous network performance and reliable connectivity. That said, its battery drains rapidly and its non exactly graceful. The My Webspot 4G+ Pocket WiFi provides like network performance in a smaller form cistron with better battery life for the same price, then it remains our Editors' Option.

Design and Features

The G2 doesn't look like your average hotspot. Measuring in at 4.6 by 2.v by 0.8 inches (HWD) and a hefty 8.0 ounces, it's significantly bigger and heavier than every other international hotspot we've tested. The Webspot, for instance, is just 0.3 inches thick past comparison. The G2 really weighs downwards your pocket, so I had to keep it in a backpack, which isn't as convenient.

The hotspot has a 3.five-inch display on the front, a speaker grille that looks a lot similar an earpiece, and an ambience calorie-free sensor. Information technology looks like a swollen iPhone 4S, which many people mistook it for as I was testing it. There's a power button on the left side in a higher place a pair of clicky volume buttons. A thick metal band along the sides combined with a white glass back adds to the effect.

The lesser edge is habitation to a USB output, letting you charge devices using the G2'due south half-dozen,000mAh battery. It supports pass-through charging, which came in handy when I lost my adapter and had to charge my phone with the hotspot. The right side has a micro USB input for charging the hotspot itself, and a flap that opens to reveal two SIM menu slots, letting you purchase and use your own SIM cards if you don't desire to utilize RoamingMan's cloudSIM.

The screen itself doesn't exercise much. Information technology's a full colour, grainy 3.5-inch impact LCD. The home screen shows whether the hotspot is connected to a cellular network, and gives you the Wi-Fi proper name and password. If you lot press the Client Service button, you become three additional settings: User Direction lets yous connect or disconnect up to v devices to the hotspot; Upgrade lets you connect to a Wi-Fi network and upgrade the hotspot'due south firmware; and Factory Reset, which restores the hotspot to its original settings. There'south also an pick to economize information usage, which works by letting you lot connect to local Wi-Fi networks when available.

Since there aren't many settings to toggle, the size and brightness of the display feel a bit unnecessary, peculiarly since it definitely affects battery life (more than on that in the next department). A smaller, monochrome panel would've been merely fine.

Network Functioning and Battery

The G2 supports GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz), WCDMA bands (1/ii/v/eight), and LTE bands (1/3/5/7/eight/17/20/39/40/41) for stiff international network connectivity. I tested it while at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Kingdom of spain. Equally you might imagine, the convention center was heavily congested with over 100,000 attendees and many, many cellular devices.

Despite this, I recorded an impressive top download speed of 25.2Mbps in the bowels of the glass-and-steel Fira Gran Via exhibition center, and a reasonable three.6Mbps upload speed. Outdoor performance was a chip ameliorate, with 28Mbps down and iv.6Mbps up. This is pretty close to the performance of the Webspot, which registered top speeds of 22Mbps down, 8Mbps up (in Deutschland).

Data is unlimited, but in one case you hit the 500MB/twenty-four hour period 4G limit, you become throttled downwards to 2G speeds. I found that 500Mbps was oft just about enough to manage a decent amount of photo uploads, several sessions worth of live tweeting, and a good amount of web browsing on both my phone and laptop. Just there were a couple of days I hit the cap, then you'd be well advised to avoid big downloads, uploads, and video streaming if you can. For a vacation, the amount of high-speed information you lot get should exist more sufficient. For business concern travel, information technology will depend on your needs.

The G2 automatically connects to the best local network available, and during my testing, I noticed that information technology connected to Vodafone most often. That's not a surprise, every bit the carrier has strong 4G LTE coverage in Spain'due south urban areas, especially Barcelona. If you lot travel outside of the city, coverage ordinarily drops to 3G, which I noticed while on a train to Madrid. 24/7 online client service is available, only I never had to make use of it.

Bombardment life was less impressive than network performance. I managed around 4 to 5 hours of battery life on average, which is less than the Webspot's solid vi hours, or 8 to 10 hours with the Skyroam 3GMate+. The G2 rarely lasted me through a total day at the convention center, though I was admittedly using it quite a scrap. All the same, y'all certainly don't want to use it as a fill-in bombardment for your phone if you don't take to—if anything, y'all might want to carry around a split up power depository financial institution to juice upwards the hotspot itself.

Comparisons and Conclusions

If you're turned off by the G2'due south size, the KnowRoaming SIM Sticker is a far smaller culling. It'due south literally a sticker that attaches to the SIM carte in your phone and gets you unlimited data for $7.99 per mean solar day. It'south a adept selection if you lot don't desire to worry about data limits or carrying a separate hotspot, but it doesn't support LTE.

For European travelers, the Webspot remains the best deal, and our Editors' Option. For €x/twenty-four hour period (which works out to x.72 USD at the current commutation charge per unit), the Webspot gets y'all 10GB of 4G LTE data for rentals less than xv days, which is more than the 7.5GB you'd become out of the G2 in the same period of time. It as well has the advantage of giving you all the data at once, rather than rationing it out in daily 500MB chunks, and it'southward lighter, thinner, and has a better battery life than the G2.

The but grab is that My Webspot is based in French republic and only delivers in Europe. If you don't mind getting the hotspot shipped to your hotel, it's no big deal. But if you want your hotspot shipped to you lot in the United states of america so that you lot accept it in hand before you travel, the GlocalMe G2 is a solid alternative.
